17-year-old boy attacked and killed by an elephant

A somber mood has engulfed residents of Lpaani village, Lodokejek Ward in Samburu Central Sub-county after a 17-year-old boy died after being attacked by an elephant while grazing livestock.

According to the residents, the killer jumbo suspected to be from Kirisia Forest, ambushed the deceased in the thickets where he was grazing livestock trampling him to death.

Samburu County Police Commander, Samson Ogello, confirmed the incident, saying that the deceased’s body had severe injuries.

“Police Officers visited the scene and found the body with some visible injuries on the head, chest and leg,” Mr Ogello said.

He said the body has been taken from the scene to a mortuary at the Samburu County Referral Hospital in Maralal town.

Ogello advised local residents against venturing deep into the forest in search of pasture and firewood so as to avoid risking their lives to attacks from wild animals.

This is the second incident to be witnessed in Samburu West within a span of one year. Another young man was killed in an elephant attack at Tamiyioi village last year.

National government through the Kenya wild Service has been called upon to speed up compensation process for the families that have lost their loved ones as well as property to attacks from wild animals.
