The Meru county government has allocated Sh38 million for infrastructural development in Maua town, Igembe South sub county.
Speaking in Maua town Saturday, the County Executive for Roads and Transport Julius M’Itumu assured the area residents that by next week the work of laying cabro paving blocks in the town and tarmacking of feeder roads in its suburbs will commence.
M’Itumu said the renovation works will not only raise the standards of Maua town but will also make it friendlier to business persons, especially Kaciongo suburb which is a 24 hour economy because of the booming miraa business operated in the area.
He further promised residents of Annex suburb that their road will be murramed because of the frequent flooding in the area as other mitigations measures are being undertaken.
When asked about the unskilled labour for the cabro works, he assured residents that his officers will offer available opportunities to the locals to enable them earn a living from the project.
“The county government will also build a shed to shield Miraa traders from bad weather as they transact their business especially during rainy seasons,” said the county executive who is also the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) Nyambene branch secretary.
M’Itumu reiterated commitment of the County government in making Meru great saying Maua is a focal point for development as one of the major towns in the region.
Meanwhile, the unionist expressed concern over criteria used in the selection of form ones during the last KCPE examination that has left many pupils with high grades disillusioned after failing to be admitted to the national schools of their choice, while others failed to be admitted to such giant institutions altogether.
“The system used was very unfair and a discouragement to hard working pupils currently in our primary schools,” he lamented.
