Political aspirants urged to refrain from violence

Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong has condemned cases of violence and election malpractices experienced during Matungu constituency by-election yesterday.

Speaking during a burial ceremony in Mayenje ward in Matayos constituency on Friday, Ojaamong said that the incident where a Member of Parliament was stripped naked was a great shame for the electoral process.

“I am quitting the gubernatorial post after serving my two terms and I want to urge those aspiring for the race including Deputy Governor Moses Mulomi, Nambale MP John Bunyasi, Woman representative Florence Mutua and Paul Otuoma to engage in mature politics devoid of character assassination and witch-hunt,” he said.

He stated that local residents have coexisted peacefully during his regime due to his firm foundation of uniting the County.

The governor added that devolution has benefitted the local residents including raising the status of Busia and Malaba towns to municipality and improving infrastructure in other urban centres.

“With the passing of Building Bridges Initiative at the referendum, more resources will be channeled to counties to help improve them economically,” he said urging the local residents to support the Constitutional Amendment Bill during the referendum.

Acts of violence are reported to have marred the Matungu constituency by-election in Kakamega County on Thursday leading to damage of property and arrests of some of the suspects.
