Malaba residents urged to pave way for the revival of the railway

Busia County Commissioner John Korir has urged those living along Webuye-Malaba Railway not to plant crops within the 30 meter Railway Reserve even as the planting season approaches.

Speaking to the press after the inspection of the 21 kilometer stretch of the Railway on Thursday, Korir noted that a large section of the line had been encroached by members of the public.

“Our greatest interest is the 30 meters from the middle of the Railway line on both sides,” he said adding that nobody should tamper or cause some hindrance to the developers contracted to rehabilitate the line.

The administrator assured members of the public that in case of evictions, the process will be carried out in a humane manner whereby the affected will be allowed to remove their property.

“In case anybody fails to comply, then the law will take its course,’’ he said urging residents to cooperate with the government authorities.

Korir further assured Kenya Railway staff that the security team will work closely with them to enable them achieve their objectives. “If we revive the Railway line, we will be able to save a lot of money in terms of road maintenance,” he said.

Earlier evictions in Kibos and Nakuru was strongly opposed by those affected maintaining they were not issued with notices and the exercise was carried out ruthlessly.
