Governor Ngilu launches Sh 73 million Illimukuyu water project in Kitui East

Kitui County Governor Charity Ngilu on Wednesday launched Sh 73 million Illimukuyu water project in Kitui East to curb perennial water shortage.

Speaking during the launch, Ngilu reiterated her administration’s resolve to shorten the distance between water points among households.

In some places, household distance to the nearest water point is between five and seven kilometers and doubles during the dry season.

Speaking during the ground breaking ceremony, Ngilu said the first phase of the project will serve residents of Kamuusa, Kalungu and Ndetani areas among others.

“This project will enhance improved water supply at household levels, improve public health and quality of life through reduced risks of water related diseases,” she said.

On the same score, the water project will spur economic growth at the local level and reduce distance and time spent on trekking distances in search of water.

The project funded by the Water Sector Trust Fund and Kitui County Government will benefit 15,506 people, 420 cattle, 200 donkeys, 2300 goats and sheep.

Nzomo Mulingwa, the chairman of the water project said it will be a big relief to the area residents to access clean water for domestic consumption and livestock.
