A good number of secondary school students who did not report back to school after the nine Month break occasioned by coronavirus pandemic had started boda-boda jobs in Kiambu and its environs.
Ms Ann Kahiga the Principal of Kiuu River Secondary School located in Mugumo area of Kirigiti location revealed Friday during a visit to the school by members of National Development Technical Committee (NDITC) projects assessment that some students had become accustomed to earning some money from the business and had developed the tendency of escaping from school to engage in the small time business.
She however lauded members of Nyumba Kumi in the area saying they were on the lookout in the villages and trading centres and that whenever they spotted any student on a motor bike, they immediately liaised with the school and the student returned to school.
Speaking to the form four Christian Religious Education, History and Geography class in the school, the Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunication Ms. Esther Koimett advised the young learners on the need for education.
“As you can see, most of us are getting old,” she said” And therefore most of the positions we hold in the government will be vacant in a few years to come waiting for people like you to fill them,” she explained to the students.
She reminded the students that going to school, was for their own good. “Take serious attention to your studies and everyone in your community will yearn to be associated with you when you are successful,” noted the PS.
Ms Koimett recalled that in the village when she was growing up, whenever national results were announced and someone was at the top, everyone talked openly about the best student and wherever they passed, villagers stopped and remarked “that is the daughter of so and so who was the best student in our school” and that this was a great encouragement for the others to work hard so that they are also role models in the community.
She therefore advised the young learners not to be tempted by the few shillings they drew from the boda-boda business but instead focus on excelling in their academics which promised them a better and brighter future.
Dr. Joyce Ngugi, Kiambu Deputy Governor advised the learners to obey their parents and teachers and most of all put God first in everything.
