County government seeks donor support

The county government of Garissa is calling for donors to support in four key thematic areas of water, agriculture and livestock, health and urban services.

Garissa County Secretary Abdi Sheikh said this Friday when he received an advance party from the British High Commission ahead of major donors visit to Garissa County.

Speaking to the delegation led by Peter Kemp RM Lieutenant Colonel of the Defense Section, Sheikh said the four sectors are the major driving force in bettering the lives of Garissa residents.

The county secretary said that the administration of Governor Ali Korane “will have achieved its five year development plan if the donor funding was availed.”

Kemp said the British government together with other donor partners will continue working closely with the county government of Garissa in supporting programmes and projects in health, water, agriculture among others sector.

Finance CEC Issa Oyow said that gaps within the four major thematic areas exists despite huge amount of funding going to the sectors.

“We have identified these four sectors that require donor support. The projects and programmes in these sectors require huge financing that the county government alone cannot manage,” Issa said.

The CEC said the Garissa county government is looking forward to a fruitful engagement with the foreign commonwealth and development partners.

His Agriculture counterpart Mohamed Shale said the donor intervention will be a major boost towards improving food security in the county.

Shale said livestock and crop farmers needed to be assisted to attain achievable and sustainable livelihood projects that will empower the local community.

“Our livestock and agriculture farmers have the potential to feed our local population and surplus for outside market,” Shale said.
