Ex-West Mugirango legislator Dr. James Gesami’s nomination as Nyamira County’ second Deputy Governor (DG) has been rejected by County assembly for failing to convince the Appointments Committee mandated in vetting nominees.
Dr. Gesami could have made the second DG after the then Governor John Nyagarama died and his deputy Amos Nyaribo took over on 29th December 2020.
Governor Amos Nyaribo forwarded the name of Dr. Gesami on 6th January 2021 to the County Assembly for vetting and approval.
Dr. Gesami appeared before the Appointment Committee on Friday 15th January, a day after a petitioner withdrew a case he had lodged in court barring his (Dr. Gesami) nomination and later appointment as DG.
The committee’s vice chair and majority leader Ms. Callen Atuya noted in the report that the candidate for DG didn’t produce some documents which the committee deemed were necessary to assist in clearing him.
Atuya said that during the vetting day, the nominee did not produce a clearance certificate from the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC), clearance from the police (good conduct certificate) and that from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).
21 of the 36 members voted for the adoption of the report from the committee to reject Gesami’s appointment as the Deputy Governor.
This now means that Governor Amos Nyaribo goes back to the drawing board to nominate another person for the seat.
