The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is delaying the release of Building Bridges Initiative signature verification exercise results so as to flex their muscles and show Kenyans their powerfulness.
According to Ugunja Member of parliament, Opiyo Wandayi, IEBC has been dragging its feet on the matter when Kenyans don’t have no luxury of time over the matter that they want dispensed with as soon as possible.
Addressing the press in Siaya Friday, Wandayi alleged that the commission has already verified more than one million signatures from the number that they were given by the BBI secretariat, a number that was already adequate to act on.
“I am aware through my sources that IEBC has finished verification of theses signatures. At least they have been able to verify a million plus signatures from what they were given,” said the legislator who is also the chair of the national assembly public accounts committee.
He called on the electoral body to come out and give clear timelines for the exercise and tell Kenyans when it the exercise will come to an end.
Wandayi said the country was eager to know when the next step, that is forwarding of the bill to the county assemblies, will be made.
“I am urging IEBC not to waste time on this matter and transmit the BBI bill to the county assemblies within this week if they are patriotic enough,” said the MP.
He said as at now the electoral commission stands the risk of being categorized as the sole impediment to anticipated constitutional amendment bill, should they fail to release the signature verification exercise results on time to enable the entire process move forward.
