Universities have been asked not to allow themselves to be intimidated by professional regulatory over accreditation of academic programmes.
The Management at universities have instead been advised to work closely with the Commission for University Education (CUE) as the sole regulatory body mandated in accrediting degree programs.
Speaking during the 8th graduation ceremony at the Technical University of Kenya (TUK) last week, the Principal Secretary State Department for University Education and Research Amb. Simon Nabukwesi urged the CUE and professional bodies to end the wrangling between them over accreditation of degree programmes.
“I have noted with concern that even after the High Court pronounced itself on this matter, some professional bodies are yet to reach a consensus with Universities offering programs that have not been accredited by these bodies themselves, yet the same are already accredited by CUE.”
The PS said the Commission for University Education (CUE) is mandated to accredit degree programs therefore, the professional bodies should honor and work together with CUE to reach a consensus with Universities.
He further urged the professional bodies to freely engage the Universities through CUE especially during curriculum review.
“It is necessary that standards are improved and maintained in every program offered in our learning institutions,” he added.
Amb. Simon Nabukwesi advised vice-chancellors of Universities to familiarize themselves with the court ruling and fully implement it.
The PS also asked the graduands to utilize the knowledge and skills they have acquired while in the university by keeping themselves busy and engaging in menial jobs even as they seek employment.
He also advised them to seek further education by applying for Government scholarships awarded through the Ministry of Education.
About 600 graduands were awarded various diplomas and degrees during the ceremony held virtually.
