Fisherman drowns in Lake Victoria

A fisherman has died, while three others were rescued after their boat capsized during a fishing expedition at Kinda beach in Suba south of Homa Bay county.
The deceased, identified as Tom Mariwa drowned after the boat they were using for fishing hit a projecting rock in the lake and capsized.
According to Homa Bay County Beach Management Unit Chairperson Edward Oremo, the incident occurred between Kiwa Island and Nyandiwa beach Tuesday night when the boat operator lost navigation path and hit the rock.
Oremo further said that deceased drowned immediately after the boat capsized and the effort to rescue him yielded no fruits.
He also said that three other fishermen who were on the same boat were rescued by their fellow fishermen from the neighbouring beach of Nyandiwa.
He further said that a patrol boat rushed to the scene after they raised an alarm for help.
Oremo said that the Beach Management Units (BMU) coordinated with area fishermen and other local divers who immediately launched a search to retrieve the deceased body.
He said that they managed to retrieve the body after a search lasting several hours.
The body was moved to Kirindo Mortuary awaiting postmortem. “The body was retrieved from the lake and taken to Kirindo mortuary awaiting postmortem,” Oromo said.
