Kwale County Commissioner (CC) Karuku Ngumo Tuesday called on politicians to conduct peaceful campaigns in the run up to the Msambweni parliamentary by-election slated for December 15.
Ngumo asked the parliamentary hopefuls to demonstrate a high level of tolerance to ensure peace prevails in the lead up, during and after the by-elections.
The seat fell vacant following the death of the immediate Member of Parliament for the constituency Suleiman Dori in March.
Parliamentary hopefuls and parties have hit the campaign trail in a bid to win the hearts and minds of Msambweni voters.
The County Commissioner asked residents to eschew all forms of negative activities that would threaten the peaceful conducting of the polls.
Ngumo was addressing residents on Tuesday when he led Mashujaa Day celebrations at Lunga Lunga primary school grounds in Lunga Lunga sub county.
The administrator advised politicians to desist from using vulgar language and trading insults while on the campaign trail that could trigger violence.
ODM party flag bearer Omar Boga and independent candidate Feisal Bader are the favorites.
Boga, a former civic leader, is the younger brother of Agriculture Principal Secretary Professor Hamadi Boga while Bader is a cousin and former personal assistant to the late MP.
Others who declared interest in the seat are Sharlet Akinyi (independent), Mshenga Ruga (independent), Bashir Kilalo (independent), Peter Nzuki (independent) Lihganje Mwakaonje (United Green movement) party and Shee Abdulrahman (Wiper party).
On his part, Governor Salim Mvurya asked Msambweni voters to elect visionary leaders who will serve them without discriminations and improve their lives.
Mvurya said Msambweni constituency needs servant leadership that would focus on the needs of the people over that of narrow selfish interest.
The county boss said those contesting for the parliamentary seat and the voters need to maintain the peace currently enjoyed in the poll area.
“Msambweni needs servant leadership that would focus on the needs of the people above that of narrow selfish interests,” he said.
