Police in Juja, Kiambu County Saturday netted 900 kilograms of bhang with a street value of over Sh23million from a house in Mwereri area, Juja farm.
They also arrested Martin Mungai 28, the house owner, alongside his friends who were found in the house and who were believed to be involved in bhang trade.
At Mungai’s compound were 23 bhang plants which the contingent of police officers uprooted and took as evidence.
Further, six ladies who had visited the house when officers were carrying search were arrested and were found with several rolls of bhang and Sh 50,000 in cash.
Speaking to the press during the raid, Juja Farm police post OCS Mumo Maundu said two other persons linked to the illegal bhang trade arrived at the scene during the raid and attempted to bribe him with Sh689,000, which he refused.
Juja Sub County Police Commander Dorothy Migarusha said those arrested would be produced in court on Monday. She said the raid was conducted by a multi-agency team, after tipoffs from locals.
The cash and the drugs have been retained as exhibit pending arraignment of the suspects.
She lauded the OCS for painting a positive image of police force that has for years been labeled to be corrupt.
“When a police officer refuses to accept a bribe of more than Sh600, 000, then it shows a transformed police force,” she said.
She said that police would investigate the CCTV cameras found within the homestead to disentangle the criminals who have been operating the business.
Juja area is known to be notorious in ‘weed’ trade and consumption with locals calling police to arrest the situation.
Central Regional Coordinator Wilfred Nyangwanga during a visit in the area this week cautioned those involved in the business that their days were numbered.
