Gender rule to apply in awarding tenders to suppliers of desks to school

The one third gender rule will be strictly adhered to when awarding tenders for the supply of desks and lockers to learning institutions under the economic stimulus programme.

Marsabit County Commissioner Paul Rotich said small entrepreneurs in the jua-kali sector would be accorded first priority with youths and women being encouraged to apply before the extended 25th September 2020 deadline.

Rotich while assuring for transparency and fairness in the process that seeks to locally procure 9,390 desks and lockers to local primary and secondary schools, said that all applicants that would satisfy the set requirements would be considered.

“All the schools will be factored in and we expect that every institution will have received their share when the exercise comes to a conclusion by November this year,” he said during a briefing in his office Tuesday.

The initiative, apart from gearing towards giving the economy a fresh start after the devastating blow dealt by the coronavirus outbreak, also seeks to enhance the Ministry of Health protocols on Covid-19 pandemic.

The County Commissioner disclosed that all public primary and secondary schools would benefit from the program, adding that the question of space does not arise in Marsabit as some pupils in certain schools used to sit on the floor due to lack of desks. The initiative is aimed at supplementing the existing capacity at the learning institutions.

Those awarded the contracts would be paid via M-Pesa because the initiative is modeled under the Kazi Mtaani programme.
