Two assistant chiefs from Fafi sub county in Garissa today testified in a case in which a clerk to area deputy county commissioner is charged with stealing relief food.

Bura East sub location assistant chief Aden Yare Sugow told Garissa senior resident magistrate Cosmas Maundu that after collecting his consignment at Bura East primary school where the relief food was stored, he received a call from Bura police station summoning him to go and record a statement on what he knew about the disappearance of 29 bags of relief food.

Ahmed Ore Hure, is charged that on diverse dates between 16th and 26th July 2019 at Bura Boarding primary school in Bura East township, Fafi sub county within Garissa county being the clerk to the Deputy county commissioner, he stole 29 bags of relief rice each weighing 50 Kgs all valued at Sh 116,000 which came into his possession by virtue of his employment.

Hure is charged alongside Abdi Buthul Shafat who it is alleged that on the 25th of July 2019 at Bura township in Fafi sub county within Garissa county dishonestly stole and retained eight bags of relief rice all valued at Sh 32,000 knowing or having reason to believe to be stolen goods.

On the other hand, Jambele sub location assistant chief Abdirahman Ahmed said when he arrived at Bura east boarding primary school to collect his consignment, he met a group of rowdy youth who were protesting that they were hungry and wanted a share of the relief food.

Ahmed said that he managed to cool them down and equally took his consignment.

Testifying, officer in charge of crime at Bura East police station Mr. George Gona said he was called in by the clerk alleging that relief food had been stolen.

When he arrived, Gona told the court that clerk took him round the store where he saw some rice that had spilled outside one of the broken windows.

After the inspection, Gona said he went back to the station with the clerk to record the statement.

During interrogation, the crime officer said the clerk’s story was not adding up and they decided to arrest him together with the watchman.
