Catholic Bishop Wants Covid-19 Fraud Probed

The Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Murang’a Rev. James Maria Wainaina has asked the investigative agencies entrusted to fight corruption to clear the air on who stole equipment and items meant to fight covid-19 pandemic.

Wainaina on Tuesday said Kenyans are eager to know the truth and thus the relevant government agencies should hasten the investigations and let those behind the scandal be brought to book.

The Bishop further said if some equipment were stolen, they need to be returned so as to help the poor who cannot afford some items needed to fight the pandemic.

He added that proper investigation is needed and blame game and politics should be avoided in the exercise as the process to know the truth.

The Bishop spoke at St. Mary’s cathedral when he received food and non-food donations from Coffee management services meant to help the less fortunate in areas under the jurisdiction of the diocese.

“Transparency and accountability is needed in resources meant to benefit the public and so those who have stolen Covid-19 equipment need to return them and the law take its course,” added the Bishop.

Meanwhile, the Bishop said the diocese has donated food to more than 5, 000 households mostly affected by effects of coronavirus since covid-19 struck the country.

He said most of the donations come from well-wishers who opt to channel their support through the church.

“So far we have touched more than 5, 000 households in Murang’a and Kirinyaga counties in an effort to cushion them from hardships posed by Covid-19,” added Wainaina.

He continued, “More people still need our support and I take this opportunity to appeal to well-wishers and people of goodwill to support the diocese and help us reach more people who are in humanitarian distress.”

The coffee management services, a company which is based in Thika donated 1,500 packets of assorted foodstuffs such as beans, maize flour and rice; 200 masks; 20 litres of sanitizer and a thermal gun.The company which was represented by Mr. Charles Mwea has set aside Sh. 20,000 to support the needy drawn from four counties who have been affected by covid-19.

Mwea said they have donated food and non-food items in counties of Kirinyaga, Embu, Murang’a and Nyeri.

“The company will continue to offer support in other counties as we also thank Catholic Church for its contribution toward the fight against covid-19,” he added.
