Schools to reopen depending on covid-19 infections, says Education CS

Education CS Prof. George Magoha has said reopening of schools will depend on the flattening of the covid-19 curve.

Prof. Magoha said the government will in the next three weeks make a decision on whether to reopen schools depending on the number of infections reported.

‘‘In three weeks all the stakeholders will come together. We are observing the curve for at least two weeks and we will sit down and make a decision,” he said.

The CS was speaking Friday, when touring Wote Technical Institute to assess Covid 19 preparedness. ‘‘I want to assume we can open earlier, if it is possible. But conditions will determine the reopening,” added Magoha.

On institutions’ preparedness on Covid-19, the CS noted that some had done well while others were ill prepared.

‘‘Some institutions like Bureti,Thika and Rift Valley Technical Institutes have done an excellent job on Covid-19 compliance, however others are low and need to pull up their socks,” he said.

The CS also disclosed that each public secondary and primary school will get between 50 and 100 locally fabricated desks to ease reopening.

He said the desks will be made by Jua kali artisans to lower the cost and stimulate the economy.
