Matatu operators want the government to move out street children whom they accused of stealing from their customers.
Speaking to KNA at the bus stage Monday, the chairman of matatu SACCOS Mathew Njoroge said that the children are scaring away travellers.
“With the congestion of the bus stage, the street children have taken advantage and are robbing travelers who have raised complains to our various offices,” he said.
According to Njoroge, most of them are adults who are engaging in crime to make ends meet.
Trans Nzoia county children’s officer Aston Maugu confirmed that there are around 230 adults on the streets and 170 children.
He said his office is partnering with local NGOs to have at least 50 children taken back to their parents with some support.
“We have a programme with Mercy Children CBO that will see us identify and take back children who have homes and they will be supported during the re-intergration period,” he said.
