Wajir County Kazi Mtani Implementation Committee on Thursday identified legacy projects to be carried in the County.
The National Hygiene Program (NHP) dubbed Kazi Mtani which was launched in the County on July 13th aims to provide employment of youth across the county to engage in activities to improve the environment in informal settlements of urban areas while cushioning the youth from economic strain especially brought about by adoption of containment policies to limit the spread of the novel corona virus.
The implementation committee comprising stakeholders from various national government departments and County government singled out long term initiatives that will have a lasting impact on communities after the six-month program.
Speaking during the committee meeting held at Wajir East Sub County Commissioner’s office, Wajir West Deputy County Commissioner Ibrahim Muchangi holding brief for County Commissioner Jacob Narengo said implementation of the long term projects will commence next week.
“We have identified seedling production and tree planting as a legacy project with a target of planting 500,000 trees countywide,” said Muchangi.
The seedlings will be produced at Wajir Forestry Service (KFS) nursery and transplanted in various institutions such as Wajir High School, County Commissioner’s residence, along streets, among others.
“Tree planting falls under the greening and urban agriculture component of the NHP program and is expected to leave a lasting legacy even after the end of the 6 month of the program,” said Muchangi.
Another project identified is paving of pedestrian walkways, painting cycle lanes, creating and repairing footbridges
