Grade two pupil drowns in Lake Victoria

A 10-year-old boy drowned in lake Victoria while swimming at Osoi beach in Gwasi South Ward of Homa Bay County.

The deceased boy identified as Wilsia Majiwa, a grade two pupil at Ongongo Primary School, met his death on Thursday when he was sent by his parents to draw water from the Lake but decided to take a swim.

Osoi Beach Management Unit Network Chairman Tobias Onyango said that the minor who was with his younger sister took a dip in the Lake and in the process, he drowned.

Onyango said that the minor took a log he found on the shore of the lake and used it as a float but unfortunately the log was overpowered by strong waves resulting in his drowning.

However, the minor’s body was later retrieved from the lake by the local fishermen with the help of members of the public.

The beach official told parents to desist from sending their children to draw water from the lake without supervision by adults to avoid such incidents in future.

The minor’s body was taken to Sori Lake Side Hospital Mortuary.
