Teacher sentenced to 20 years for defiling pupil

A Molo court has slapped a 60-year-old teacher at Tembwa primary school in Kuresoi South with 20 years’ imprisonment for defiling and impregnating his 14-year-old pupil.

Principal magistrate, Rhoda Yator told the court Friday that the evidence tabled before the court through the prosecution indicated that David Langat actually committed this heinous act to a minor whom he ought to have protected from such a vice.

The sentence read in part “…the accused mitigates that he is 60-year-old and he went further to take advantage of an innocent 14-year-old girl. The accused took advantage of a child in her custody as a student and impregnated her.  The court thus is aware of the rising number of defilement cases and in order to deter like-minded and send a warning, the accused is sentenced to 20-year imprisonment with a right of appeal.”

Yator continued to say that with this, the teacher deserved a harsh punishment since he caused an irreversible damage to the minor who playing parental roles at a tender age.

She observed that Langat ought to have acted as a father figure to the girl, but instead he preyed on her causing the girl’s family psychological pain.

Langat first appeared in court on January 14, 2019 for plea taking. He faced defilement charges where he committed the offence on 29th December, 2018 at Keringet centre in Kuresoi South. He also faces an alternative charge of having an indecent act with the minor.

In another court, resident magistrate Emmanuel Soita has sentenced a middle aged man to life imprisonment for defiling a six-year-old girl at Elburgon in Molo sub-county.

According to Soita, Joseph Mwangi was found guilty of the offence in accordance to the evidence including the doctor’s report that was presented before the court.
