Motor vehicle mechanics in Kisii County are making a kill by installing gadgets in Public Service Vehicles following implementation of road safety rules, popularly known as Michuki rules.
The mechanics are working tirelessly to ensure the vehicles are compliant before they are back on the road.
A spot check by KNA revealed various garage premises were full with the matatus awaiting their turn with the mechanics.
Erick Moseti who works in one of the garages noted that their work load had gone up 100% over the last one week.
Across town near Naivas Backstreet is another garage that is operating 6 days a week. Daniel Oyaro who carries out spraying and panel beating explained that the workload forced the garage owners into calling in for extra hands, landing him the job.
“This is my first week on the job and it has been the busiest in my short career in spray painting of especially the yellow strip,” he said amid chuckles.
Patel Singh who owns Hardware store based Hospital Road of Kisii Town said he had made high profits in the last one week.
This comes even after stakeholders in the public service transport sector petitioned the government to extend the deadline for implementation of the road safety rules saying they were incurring great losses from staying out of business.
They complained of delays in obtaining some of the compliance documents and urged Interior Ministry Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Fred Matiang’i to accord them more time to meet the requirements.
