Suspected Al-Shabaab militants destroy mast and AP camp in Korakora

Suspected Al-Shabaab militants last night destroyed a Safaricom mast and an AP camp in Korakora village some 21 kilometres from Garissa town.

Garissa County Commissioner Meru Mwangi confirmed the incident saying there were no casualties during the midnight attack.

Mwangi said that Garissa sub-county security team led by Deputy County Commissioner Samwel Njuguna visited the scene and were yet to give a report.

“The information I have for now is that the attackers destroyed the Safaricom mast and an AP camp in Korakoara. A team of security officers led by Garissa deputy county commissioner Samwel and security team are at the scene as we speak,” Mwangi said.

The whereabouts of the security officers at the camp is known.

Garissa County has witnessed a lull in Al-Shabaab attacks since January 7 where the militants destroyed a Safaricom mast in a dawn attack that left four pupils of Saretho boarding pimary school dead.

A week later the militants attacked Kamuthe trading centre where they shot and killed three non-local teachers.

The Kamuthe attack prompted the Teachers’ Service Commission to transfer all non-local teachers from North Eastern region despite an uproar from local leadership.
