Police in  Voi sub-county on Wednesday afternoon intercepted a vehicle carrying over 400kg of bhang worth Sh.2.4 million along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.

The  vehicle  was nabbed at Ndara area in Voi by Highway Patrol Officers after a tip-off. The driver fled leaving the car behind.

The drug is suspected to have been sneaked into the country from Uganda and was on transit to Mombasa.

Confirming the incident, County Police Commander, Halima  Abdi said a manhunt has been launched to nab the people behind the bhang.

“We managed to intercept this vehicle which is now the focus of our investigations. We will establish who owns it,” she said.

The vehicle and the illicit cargo are being held at Voi Police Station.

The bhang, packed in several sacks, cartons and in rolls, was stuffed in the boot.

Security organs in the county have termed Taita-Taveta as a conduit for contraband goods and drugs due to its proximity to the Tanzania border and the port of Mombasa. Both Nairobi-Mombasa and Voi-Taveta-Holili highways are notorious routes for drug trafficking.
