Government assures inmates of their safety

The  government has put in proper mechanisms that will help prevent inmates from contracting the deadly corona virus.

Speaking  when he visited Kitale Annex, Medium, Women and Main Prisons on Saturday, the Commissioner General (CG) of Prisons, Wycliffe Ogalo said that the ministry of health guidelines on the disease is being observed by all prisons nationwide.

“We are making all efforts to ensure that your safety here is guaranteed and what is required of you is to adhere to the protective and hygiene measures to help curb COVID-19,” he said.

According to Ogalo, visiting of inmates has been prohibited as a preventive measure against the virus.

The commissioner General however assured inmates that the government is working around the clock to resume court proceedings soon and asked those affected to be patient.

“I know many of you have been delayed due to the COVID-19 but I am asking you to be patient as the court will work on pending cases as from this week,” Ogalo said.

He added that mechanisms have also been put in place to ensure that prisons are de congested through courts.

Michael  Wanyama, an inmate at Kitale main prison asked the government to issue inmate candidates with new syllabus books to help them compete favourably with other candidates when schools resume.

The  Trans Nzoia County Commissioner, Samson  Ojwang  who was present asked prison wardens and inmates to adhere to guidelines issued by the ministry of health to help fight corona virus.
