The World Food Programme (WFP) is lending support towards the ongoing campaign against the coronavirus (covid-19) pandemic at the port of Mombasa.
The port of Mombasa is the gateway to East and Central Africa and is one of the busiest ports in the region.
In a show of solidarity, the organisation through its Head based in Mombasa Clara Silva donated an assortment of items including face masks, hand sanitizers and thermometers to aid in prevention against the spread of the virus.
KPA acting Managing Director (MD) Engineer Rashid Salim on Saturday lauded the WFP for their kind gesture noting that the relief will further bolster the ongoing efforts to keep the virus out of the port.
He further promised Ms Clara of KPA’s support in facilitating humanitarian operations at the port.
Eng. Salim thanked WFP for the donation terming it a good gesture for the improvement of the safety of staff and port users at the facility.
The Port of Mombasa has been lauded for the timely and stringent procedures it has implemented since the outbreak to curb the spread of the disease while ensuring minimal disruption to business.
Meanwhile, for the second time during the covid-19 pandemic, Maersk Kenya donated 10 boxes of N95 masks to be used by port employees in order to protect themselves from possible exposure to the contagious disease.
KPA Acting MD was at hand to receive the donations saying the delivery was timely and will be distributed as soon as possible.
Maersk is the world’s largest container shipping company and also enjoys top position in Mombasa in terms of Share of container volume.
Eng.Salim said KPA is doing everything possible to ensure the continuity of port operations while protecting the staff and trying to avoid further spread of the coronavirus.
