Matatu operatorswarned against resuming operations

Matatu operators who have not complied with the ‘Michuki rules have been warned of stern action should they dare resume operations without complying with the rules.

Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Augustine Nthumbi said they had firm instructions to ensure that traffic rules were adhered to, to the letter by all public service vehicles as part of the measures to restore sanity on our roads.

The county police commander advised the PSV operators to ensure that their vehicles are fully compliant with the traffic rules and regulations before continuing with their daily operations.

Disruption of transport operations in the North Rift region continued Tuesday as a contingent of security personnel enhanced the crackdown against public service vehicle operators who had not complied with the Michuki rules.

Hundreds of travelers going to various destinations were stranded at most matatu booking offices and the main Eldoret town termini with only a few public service operators who have complied with the traffic regulations operating.

The crackdown that is conducted by the security officers in collaboration with the National Safety and Transport Authority officials has greatly affected Eldoret-Nakuru, Eldoret-Webuye, Eldoret- Kakamega, Eldoret- Kapsabet and Eldoret-Iten-Kabarnet routes.

Consequently, Eldoret town residents had to walk for long distances to work while others opted to hire the services of bodaboda and bicycles riders to reach their places of work.

The few matatus plying the routes from estates to town have taken advantage to increase fares with those operating from town to Maili Nne route charging Sh50 instead of the usual sh20 while fares from Eldoret to Kapsabet doubled from the usual Sh200 to Sh400.
