Magarini MP asks police to arrest a police officer

Magarini MP, Michael Kingi has asked the police to arrest and charge a police officer who shot and injured a man who was transporting charcoal on his motor bike last week in Magarini.

The MP said it was unfair to see the police officer based at Adu Police station in Magarini Sub-County walk scot free after the incident five days ago, while the victim is still suffering at his Hospital bed at Malindi Sub-County hospital with bullet wounds.

Speaking at Marereni Police station Sunday, Mr. Kingi who was accompanied by Francis Auma from MUHURI said both Magarini OCPD, Gerald Barassa and Deputy County Commissioner, Samuel Lokorio confirmed that the officer shot the charcoal transporter by bad lack.

He wondered how a police officer could just shoot at a suspect who was not a threat without even interrogating him.

He added that the national police Service have ways of dealing with such cases but surprisingly up to date no action had been taken on the suspected officer who is well known.

Kingi said police officers are frustrating locals in Magarini instead of focusing on their duties.

Speaking at the same place, Mr. Auma said MUHURI would follow up on the case up to the end.

He added that they had been disappointed by the manner in which police were frustrating locals in Magarini.

He said it was strange that the family of the victim could not be allowed to write a statement at the Police station until intervention of the MP and human rights officials.

On the material day the police officer reportedly shot the victim Safari Shanga at close range at Magarini village near a homestead of a pastor after chasing him for over one and a half kilometers.

The OCPD said police were still investigating the matter to establish the cause of the shooting.
