The Murang’a County Women Representative, Sabina Wanjiru Chege has promised to work out ways of rehabilitating commercial sex workers from the county and help them set up legal income-generating projects.
The legislator has said she would start with educating the group on dangers of the age-old trade before supporting them to start other activities to eke a living.
Speaking as she distributed food to about 120 commercial sex workers and other needy groups form Murang’a town on Monday, Chege promised that her office will come up with various income generating projects which will help the women support their families.
Chege said the women will be supported to start small businesses using the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF), in an effort to help them stop the commercial sex work.
The women told KNA that their families have been going hungry since the government imposed the curfew measures because of Coronavirus as they could not do their night business and besides, their customers were also indoors
They said if supported, they were ready to shun the behavior and engage in other legal activities to earn a living.
Some of them observed that they have been into the illegal business for more than 10 years and did not know what else to do.
“We are going through difficult times as we cannot roam around at night to get customers. Getting food has been a big challenge,” said one of the commercial workers who identified herself as Gacheri.
Other groups that benefited with food from Chege included the aged, barbers and those who work in beauty shops.
Since the beginning of April this year, the county government closed operations of barbershops and salons leaving scores of workers without source of income.
Chege said the beauticians and barbers have been going through many challenges, noting that her office will continue providing food to those facing difficulties occasioned by Covid-19.
“We have given food to the aged and those who lost their jobs among other groups but demand for food is very high and I appeal to well-wishers to support families which have been going without food,” said Chege.
