Rarieda MP, Otiende Amolo has called on the police in the region to consider pardoning or releasing petty offenders on police bond to reduce congestions in the police cells.
Dr. Otiende said that as the country fights the spread of corona virus the officers need to come up with innovative but legal ways to decongest the cells.
He stated that the officers need to consider the nature of offence committed before booking the offenders in police cells to reduce chances of spread of the virus.
The legislator was speaking on Wednesday during the commissioning of an office block constructed by area National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) for police officers at Aram Police Station to enhance service delivery to residents in the region.
The MP said the newly built office will not only improve service offered by officers to the public but will also decongest the station during this period when the country is grappling with the spread of corona virus.
“As the police enforce directives to contain the spread of corona virus, they also need ample space and room to serve the people which could not be possible with old structures,” Otiende stated
Otiende said security is an essential service especially during the corona pandemic and all efforts should be made to ensure that police officers work in a safe and secure environment.
He disclosed that similar projects focused to improve working conditions of police officers have also been undertaken at Mahaya, Ndori and Asembo Bay police posts by the NG-CDF.
The Rarieda NG-CDF Chairman, Dr. Paul Saoke said the office block which was constructed at a cost of Shs.1.4 million will house the offices of Sub county police commandant and his deputy.
He said that the NG-CDF will also refurbish the women cells and the latrines at the station which are in a dilapidated state.
The Rarieda Sub County Police Commander, Thomas Ototo said the project will rejuvenate their efforts of promoting security in Rarieda.
Ototo assured the public that they are committed to deal with criminals who have been taking advantage of curfew hours to break into business premises.
Elsewhere, four classrooms constructed at a cost of shs. 3 million at Pala Kobong primary school were also commissioned by Dr. Otiende in readiness for reopening of schools.
