Two candidates were locked up at Akala police station in Gem sub county, Siaya over alleged involvement in examinations malpractices.
The duo who were students at Kaudha Mixed Secondary school were whisked to the police station after they were found with a cellphone that had Chemistry subject questions and answers.
They had just sat for the paper during the ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examinations.
According to sources, some candidates were heard complaining that some of their colleagues had an undue advantage as they had sneaked in a phone with questions and answers.
This led to an impromptu search by a team of examinations officials, led by the school principal, Caroline Omondi Oriwo, said the source.
He said that upon the search, a student, Vincent Otieno was found with the cellphone but on interrogation, he denied ownership and instead pointed a finger towards his colleague, Kevin Omondi as its owner.
Nyanza regional coordinator for education, Richard Chepkawai confirmed the arrest of the two candidates but refused to comment further, saying that the issue was being handled by the police.
The arrest of the students brings to question the integrity of the examinations that top education officials, among them the education cabinet secretary, Amina Mohammed and the Kenya National examinations council chairman, Prof. Joseph Magoha have been insisting that have not leaked.
