Government urged to arrest plunderers of Disaster Management funds

The national government has been urged to seal graft loops within funds allocated for the disaster management kitty to resolve the problem of perennial floods in the country.

Amani National Congress (ANC) Nominated Member of Parliament (MP) Mr. Godfrey Osotsi made the appeal when he addressed members of the press in Mbale town on Friday.

Osotsi attributed the perennial flooding problem in the country to inadequate funds coupled with what he described as mismanagement of the little cash allocated to the disaster kitty.

“Unless the government takes drastic measures against plunderers of disaster management funds several parts of the country will continue to grapple with problems caused by natural catastrophes, especially floods,” said Osotsi.

The legislator cited the Kimwarer and Arro dam where it was alleged billions of shillings meant for the mega project found its way to individuals’ pockets.

He challenged relevant institutions including, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Ethics and Anti-Corruption Authority (EACC) and Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) to step up the war against corruption to safeguard millions of shillings from being wasted.

“For instance since the lid was lifted over the Kimwarer and Arror corruption scandal the relevant institutions have done very little in terms of arresting suspects and recovering the funds,” claimed the legislator.

With over 200 lives already claimed and hundreds of families displaced by current raging floods witnessed countrywide, Osotsi wants the government to construct dams and dykes along major rivers that overflow during heavy rain seasons.

“There is an urgent need to build dams along Nzoia River in order to check the flooding problem in several parts of western region and particularly Budalangi,” pointed out Osostsi.
