Two Islamic organizations SUPKEM and CIPK on Wednesday donated foodstuff to Muslim inmates at the Garissa main GK prison to supplement their diet the holy month of Ramadhan.
The foodstuff that included rice, cooking oil, sugar and dates for breaking the fast were presented to the inmates through the prison’s authorities.
Speaking at the facility SUPKEM Secretary General (SG), Abdullahi Salat who was accompanied by several clerics called on Kenyans to stand as the country goes through unprecedented times in battling the Covid-19.
“We are going through one of the most unprecedented times in the country’s history. The Covid-19 and now the floods has thrown many Kenyans off balance and will take ages for them to recover,” Salat said.
“The only way to ease some of these challenges is for us to come together as a country and assist the unprivileged among us,” he added.
He said that majority of Kenyans were living from hand to mouth hence the need for the privileged to come out and assist those in need.
Salat also urged other well-wishers to come out and extend a helping hand to the growing list of Kenyans in dire need of assistance.
“We want to make a passionate appeal to corporate entities, persons of goodwill and nongovernmental organizations to donate funds and material support those in need. It doesn’t have to be much, the little you give makes a difference,” he noted.
The SG regretted that most of the time some groups like inmates tend to be forgotten by those making donations.
Salat further expressed his concern on the number of Kenyans openly defying Ministry of Health guidelines meant to help them from contracting and spreading the deadly Corona virus.
“This kind of behavior, including indiscipline, don’t care attitude only serve to make matters worse for all of us. We must stop and learn to obey the laws of the land,” he said.
The North Eastern Regional Prison Commander, Gicheru Kamore while appreciating those who made the donation urged other well-wishers to also chip in and assist.
