Makuyu, Kambiti markets marked are dangerous spots

Police in Murang’a South Sub County have earmarked the stretch between Makuyu and Kambiti markets along the Thika-Nyeri road as the most dangerous accident hot spots along the highway.

The  Makuyu Traffic Base Commander, Abdulahi  Tato  said though cases of road carnages along the highway have reduced significantly, hardly a day passes without a pedestrian being knocked dead while crossing the road by speeding vehicles.

Tato said crackdown on reckless drivers would be intensified during this rainy season and over the impending Christmas festivities to reduce accidents on the busy highway.

He said police have held public barazas within the two markets to sensitize locals on how to avoid road accidents, adding that a number of reckless drivers have already been arrested.

While calling on drivers to be cautious all the time, Tato decried the current state of the road, saying it becomes slippery during hot and rainy seasons.

The  Commander  was speaking on Thursday  in  Makuyu market during a crackdown on drivers found speeding, carrying excess passengers or operating un-roadworthy vehicles.

About 30 drivers were arrested, with  Tato warning that the crackdown would be intensified in the coming days to contain accidents in the area.

He  said they were keen on miraa drivers who ply the route from Meru and who sped at will, though the vehicles avoided the route yesterday after learning of the crackdown from other drivers.

Boda boda operators were also not spared, with the Commander, claiming that they contributed immensely to the increased cases of road accidents in the area.
