The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has approved the implementation of a new bus terminus at the Asian quarters in Nyeri town.
Nyeri county government submitted the Environmental Impact Assessment Study report that NEMA has successfully reviewed, approved and issued a li¬cense for the implementation of the Asian quarters bus stage.
A communique from the Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga’s press service says the license was issued on April 1, this year and signed by Nema’s Director General.
“This followed a public partici¬pation held earlier on in the year by NEMA, where Nyeri county residents overwhelmingly sup¬ported the flagship project situated in Nyeri town noting that it will improve the social and economic status of the area,” the statement read in part.
The project will have the fol¬lowing benefits: decongest Nyeri town, reduction of traffic jams which will result in reduction in economic development, expansion of Nyeri town and creation of employment opportunities for the residents.
It is funded jointly by the World Bank and the County government of Nyeri to the tune of Sh600 million and involves 1,000 business stalls, 300 matatu PSV parking bays, half an acre of open air market, one acre for garage, parking area for lorries and 100 taxi parking bays.
Other facilities will include a four storey business centre, a police post, a fire station, five sanitation blocks, a green park and a county office during the first phase.
