Suspected Covid-19 case isolated in Elgeyo Marakwet

One person suspected of having the Covid-19 virus is being isolated at the Tambach sub district hospital in Elgeyo Marakwet.

According to Governor  Alex  Tolgos, the person who had travelled from Nairobi was picked up after exhibiting high body temperature during the on-going screening of passengers which started last week.

Tolgos who was addressing the media after a meeting with his county executives in his office said samples had been taken for testing and the medical personnel were awaiting for results.

The governor added that 20 families out of the 40 spread over the county who had been placed on quarantine have been given a clean bill of health while the remaining 20 were still being assessed.

Tolgos appealed to residents to adhere to the laid down measures of washing their hands, social distancing and avoiding unnecessary travels by staying at home, saying they should not assume they were safe just because they were in the villages.

He added that the county was contemplating banning all training activities as some athletes have defied the order to stop training as groups and instead train as individuals.

The Governor  said the county had procured additional personal protection gears which would be distributed to health personnel adding that his government was also in the process of procuring two more ventilators for Iten referral hospital bringing the total to five.

“All the three ventilators acquired earlier have been mounted at the Tambach isolation centre and we are also expecting more from Ampath,” he said.

The county boss called on all residents to ensure they get the government approved masks for their safety and called on all public transport operators to ensure that passengers adhered to the same.

“We are especially targeting boda boda operators who are still defying the safety measures and we are warning you that if you break the law, you will have your motor bike impounded while you will be prosecuted,” he warned.

The governor called on farmers to use the time they were at home to prepare their shambas in a bid to ensure there was enough food in the county and regretted that this season the government would not provide subsidized fertilizer.

He appealed to residents to strictly adhere to the curfew saying this would also give police officers time to stay in their houses.

“If all of us are home between 7.00pm-5.00am, our police officers will also be able to stay at home and avoid the disease. Remember they are also human,” he appealed.

The governor appreciated the medical personnel and police officers for working round the clock to ensure that residents stayed safe.
