Machakos county has received 4 tonnes of sanitisers from the national government in a concerted effort to prevent the coronavirus outbreak.
Speaking to the press at her office today ,the Machakos County Commissioner Esther Maina said the sanitisers are packed in 500 millimeters and 20 litre containers.
“The 500 millimeter containers are for household use while the 20 litre containers are meant for institutions such as health centres, police stations, Chiefs` offices, market centres, and other places where Kenyans frequent for essential services,” said Ms. Maina
“This is the government’s gesture in response to coronavirus that has continued to ravage not only Kenya but the whole world,” she added
The County Commissioner urged residents to continue adhering to the guidelines given by the government and warned that those defying the orders will be held accountable.
“This is in compliance with the National Government directive to protect its citizens,” said Maina, adding that her office is committed to ensuring that the virus does not spread.
She however warned the residents against consuming the sanitisers adding that they should be careful not to be exposed to open fire given that the sanitisers are highly flammable.
“There are those that will think that because the free sanitisers have 80 percent ethanol they can drink it. It’s unfit for human consumption and highly flammable,” she added.
She further hailed the residents for heeding the government directive to observe the dusk to dawn curfew adding that the trend should continue to avoid confrontations with security officers.
President Uhuru Kenyatta on March 18 mandated the Kenya Pipeline Corporation to liaise with selected oil industry players and other private sector players who expressed willingness to produce alcohol-based sanitisers for free distribution to the public throughout the country as one way of preventing the spread of covid-19.
