Fishermen in Siaya County have welcomed the government’s move to exempt them from the dusk to dawn curfew that was imposed as a precautionary measure to curb the spread of coronavirus.
Led by Siaya County Beach Management Units Network Chairman Mr. Meshack Okuku Ndiege, the fishermen thanked the government for considering their plight adding that this will enable them ply their trade.
On Tuesday, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya announced curfew exemption to food and fresh produce transporters together with fishermen, a move that the chairman has lauded saying that it will help them a great deal because most of the fishing activities are often done during the night.
They therefore vowed to ensure they observe strict adherence to other government regulations which include maintenance of personal hygiene and social distancing to prevent the spread of the deadly virus.
Mr. Okuku, who spoke to the press, took the opportunity to impress upon all the fishermen in the county to ensure they observe total compliance of the laid down directives to avoid clashing with the law enforcement agencies.
He revealed that given that they have been exempted from the dusk to dawn curfew, fishermen will be required to leave for the lake between 5pm to 6pm to avoid clashing with the police who are executing the curfew orders on the mainland.
