A young mother who was carrying her baby was on Tuesday rescued after she accidentally fell into a manhole at the Kiambu Level 5 Hospital.
Mary Wahu who had brought her baby to the level 5 facility for treatment was however lucky as she only suffered a cut on her left leg. Her baby escaped with no injury.
She was rescued by good Samaritans who had also visited the hospital in search of treatment.
Despite the fall, she protected the baby she had put in a carrier as concerned members of the public rushed to the manhole to assist her get out. She however did not lose track of the woman who helped her carry her baby as others ushered her into the doctor’s room for treatment.
The hole had dirty water which left her clothes soaked from the waist downwards. An enforcement officer of the Kiambu sub-county who also witnessed the accident blamed the hospital staff for not sealing the manhole during the routine maintenance of the hospital.
Francis Mungai said if the location of the manhole would have been secured with visible objects, the accident would have been averted.
Mungai also advised members of the public to be careful when walking within the hospital and other areas and ensure they did not accidentally step on the manhole covers. He said some of the manhole covers were old and any force would cause unnecessary accidents that could be avoided.
At the time of going to press, Wahu was being attended to by the doctor as a Good Samaritan took care of her baby within her vicinity.
After the accident, Mungai assisted the workers at the hospital to secure the location of the manholes so as to prevent more accidents during the routine cleaning of the health facility.
