Tana River parents told to send their children to school

Parents in Tana River County have been urged to send their children to school for them to become responsible future adults.

The county senator Golicha Juma Wario and Garsen MP Ali Wario Guyo have urged the residents to reciprocate the huge investment being made by the government in the education sector by enrolling their children in schools.

The two leaders were speaking on Saturday at a public event to unveil the newly constructed police station for Kone location of Garsen Sub County.

The police station was constructed with funding from the Garsen constituency development fund and officially opened by Coast Regional Commissioner (RC) John Elung’ata accompanied by Coast Regional Police Commander Rashid Yakub and Tana River County Commissioner (CC) Oning’oi ole Sosio.

The two leaders advised parents to take their children’s education seriously since they would be the future leaders of the country.

Wario said parents have a critical role to play in the education of their children and ensure that children of school age are enrolled in schools.

The leaders said the residents of Garsen Sub County are mainly livestock keepers and are having challenges accessing watering points due to land grabbing.

He said herders need a corridor to access watering points along the River Tana that meanders in the vast county.

Elung’ata said parents who sabotage the government’s 100 percent transition policy to secondary school education would be dealt with.

The Regional Commissioner said the 100 percent transition policy championed by the national government is aimed at reducing the number of out of school children across the country.

“We will be forced to crack the whip and arrest parents who fail to send their children to school,” said Elung’ata.

He went on, “we will not resolve the menace of out of school children if we continue talking nicely to reluctant parents and guardians.”

The Regional Commissioner said the government is determined to ensure that Kenyan children have equal opportunity to learn regardless of their background.

He said the government is investing in the sector to provide children access to affordable and quality education that would make them competitive globally.
