Nanyuki’s St. Christopher School is this year the Mt. Kenya swimming champions in the Private and International Preps Schools Sports Association (PIPSSA) championship.
St. Christopher School who were last year’s defending champions dominated the swimming gala held at the institution on Saturday for the second time in a row with various swimmers winning most of the races that saw them garner 467 points overall.
St. Christopher will represent Mt. Kenya region during the national competition that will be held at Makini School in Nairobi on 7th and 8th March. The winner of the finals will represent the country in the East African championship that will take place in Kampala, Uganda in July this year.
The Braeburn School Nanyuki came second with 433 points in the competition that attracted children from age six to 17 years held annually for the last two years. Mpesa academy from Thika finished third with 238 points to close the top three spots.
St. Christopher won the boys’ category in the competitions with 272 points but Braeburn School upstaged them in the girls’ category after they emerged winners with 261 points beating St. Christopher who came second with 195 points
The Hampton School’s, Domitilla Nafuna aged 14, who won the freestyle breaststroke and back stroke races emerged tops in the girls’ category after she garnered 28 points.
Six-year-old, Gakinya Ng’ang’a from Braeburn school emerged best in the category after he won all his races bagging 33 points in the competition that attracted seven schools from the region.
Samuel Lokomar 16, from Mpesa Foundation Academy and 11-year-old, Victor Ngucie also topped in their respective categories in the boys competitions with 33 points each.
St. Christopher’s School swimming coach, Omari Ali said that his swimmers were upbeat on winning the national competitions next month and proceed to represent the country in East African championships, a feat they also achieved last year.
