Atwoli calls for support of BBI forums

The Central Organization of Trade Unions Secretary General Francis Atwoli has called on the citizenry to embrace the Building Bridges Initiative report as it proposes shared prosperity.

Atwoli said the document aims at ensuring equitable distribution of national resources and opportunities so that no community feels it has been marginalized.

The COTU boss was speaking during the inspection tour of Bukhungu stadium which will be the venue of the Western region BBI meeting scheduled for Saturday.

He said the report just needs some polishing of a few grey areas and then be approved by the electorate at the referendum.

The trade unionist took issue with a section of politicians from the region who are opposed to the forum saying they were advancing selfish interests.

The attendees will mainly be drawn from Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia, Vihiga and Trans-Nzoia counties.

Nabii Nabwera, the chairman of the secretariat organizing the meeting said they have invited all the 47 governors, all the senators, all MPs and MCAs in Western Kenya as well as representatives of various interest groups.

The Members of Parliament (MPs) against the meeting include Ben Washiali (Mumias East), John Waluke (Sirisia) Didmus Barasa (Kimilili) and Mwambu Mabonga of Bumula.

They claim the event is an Orange Democratic Movement party function as its organizers are Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya who is the deputy party leader and Francis Atwoli who is Raila Odinga’s ardent supporter.

The disgruntled faction is planning to hold a parallel rally at Mumias Sports Complex.
