A section of residents of Laikipia County took to the streets in Nanyuki town on Tuesday to celebrate the sacking of Agriculture Cabinet Secretary, Mwangi Kiunjuri following President Uhuru Kenyatta cabinet reshuffle.
The residents led by Laikipia East MP, Amin Deddy and former Deputy Governor, Gitonga Kabugi termed the axing of the CS, a native of the area, as “long overdue” accusing him of incompetence in managing the docket and disrespect to President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The residents who marched on the town’s streets waving banners bearing President’s Uhuru portrait with written inscriptions saying “Thank you Mr. President, Laikipia we are with you” taunted Kiunjuri to engage fully in politics now that he had been relieved of his cabinet duties.
“We want to assure the president of our unwavering support as residents of Laikipia East and we are fully behind his actions to get rid of appointees who fail to deliver in the mandate bestowed upon them,” Deddy said amid cheers from the town residents.
The MP added that it was regrettable that when Kiunjuri was appointed to the Cabinet, Kenyans expected efficient service delivery from him but regrettably he has continuously engaged in politics neglecting his duties.
“All we hear from Kiunjuri is his Kikuyu parables and riddles as he attends public functions and we have been wondering, does know his work as a CS?” Deddy said.
Deddy further added that Kiunjuri had nothing to show for in the constituency despite serving as area MP for three consecutive terms.
“Infrastructure in this constituency is pathetic yet he served as MP for 15 years, this tells you why he was so incompetent as a CS,” Deddy said.
Kabugi said that Kiujuri had been a liability to the residents of Laikipia East due to his penchant for constantly engaging in the 2022 succession politics.
“He (Kiunjuri) was more concerned in 2022 politics than he was committed to running his docket thus going against President Uhuru’s directive that leaders should desist from politics and instead focus on delivering on their mandate especially the big four agenda,” Kabugi said.
