All five Boni schools within the Boni area re-opened this week according to Lamu County Commissioner (CC), Macharia Irungu.
This revelations comes after combined efforts by regional, county government internal security and education officials to ensure that the schools in Mararani, Mangai, Barsuba, Milimani and Bodhei are re-opened.
The schools were closed in 2014 due to prevalent Al-Shabaab attacks that made learning untenable in the Boni area.
The schools reopening exercise is a welcome relief for more than 800 pupils some of whom had to go to Mokowe Boarding School or Kiunga Day School in a bid to access learning.
Some children had dropped out altogether due to the long distance to school.
Irungu coordinated the five school re-opening exercise.
Speaking to KNA on Wednesday, the senior public administration official stated that the teachers who have been posted to these schools will be living in the nearby security agents’ camps as a way of assuring their safety.
The national government had last month advertised for intern teachers to apply for jobs in Lamu.
Those employed by the TSC were posted early this week and teaching is expected to resume immediately.

In 2016 teachers who had been deployed in the volatile area,tendered their resignation to the TSC Lamu office citing fears of being killed after threats were issued to them to vacate due to being non-indigenous.
