About 700 residents of Nyaro, Kabuto and other floods prone areas in Nyatike Sub-county, have been forced to camp in schools and churches after their homes were submerged in water following continuous heavy rains
Subsequently, their entire property destroyed by raging floods and the victims were now in dire need of food, clean water, clothes and drugs.
Meanwhile, Lwala Community Alliance in collaboration with Migori County Government Health Department has donated an assortment of foodstuffs to the affected people who are camping at Agenga Secondary School.
A community health worker with Lwala community, Dorine Awino said they distributed maize, beans and sugar to the victims, especially pregnant women at the camp.
“We have also donated water filtering containers and water treatment tablets for they urgently need clean water,” she said.
At the same time, people who are still in their homes have been directed move to higher grounds after it emerged that continuous heavy rains may cause more havoc, added Awino.
“During our assessment we realized that many families have been affected, after homes and roads were destroyed,” said Awino.
The county Public Health Officer, Dancan Arunda, said Kabuto and Nyora in Nyatike were prone to floods and they are trying to put up intervention measures to ensure that the affected families go back to their normal life.
However, he said public health officers, community health assistants and community health volunteers have been dispatched to help in case of any disease outbreak.
“As you know, during floods there is the risk of disease outbreak, mostly we have diarrhea, malaria and malnutrition. The teams are moving from house to house training people to ensure that there was no outbreak,” he said.
Arunda, however, thanked the Lwala Community Alliance and other relief groups who working to ensure Nyatike flood victims are helped.
