Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong has asked Malaba sewerage project contractor to erect dykes along the banks of River Malakisi and Malaba to curb frequent floods at Amoni and Machakusi.
In a memorandum presented on his behalf to the Lake Victoria North Water Works Development Authority (LVNWWDA) by Teso North Sub County
Administrator Chrisantus Okware during a site meeting at Malaba Friday, Ojaamong stated that only dykes will eliminate floods in the area.
In the memorandum, Ojaamong also wants the contractor of the Sh600 million project to provide water to the community, construct foot bridges across river Malakisi which separates Teso North and South and
to extend the sewer line to Koteko area in Malaba South Ward.
Jared Okungu from LVNWWDA agreed with the memorandum demands saying construction of dykes, foot bridges and a library at Akiriamasit primary school will be financed from the contingency fund.
He also told the meeting that the project will include repair of the Amoni-Akiriamasit road.
The resident engineer in charge of the project James Okwero disclosed that the Chinese Contractor got official order to start the 20 month long project on November 4th, 2019.
Acting County Director for Water Affairs Raphael Waswa said the county government is ready to offer all the necessary support to ensure completion of the project which is set to transform the socio-economic
status of Malaba town.
Engineer Liu Baoyong of Sinohydro Corporation Limited said he was ready to execute his duties to the required standards besides ensuring the project is completed within the set time frame.
Teso North Maendeleo ya Wanawake chairlady Beatrice Idachi urged the contractor to also involve women in the projects construction works.
Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Teso North Branch chair Job Atte appealed to residents of Malaba to embrace the project saying it will greatly transform the town’s status.
