Leaders in Mwingi have decried increasing road accidents along Mwingi-Garissa highway after at least five school children lost their lives this year.
Speaking on Thursday during Jamhuri day celebrations held at Ndauni primary school, the leaders called on Kenya Highway Road Authority (KENhA) to put up bumps at black spot areas especially near schools situated along the road.
“We have lost two children in Enziu primary school and three students of Kivou Secondary School who were knocked down by over speeding vehicles while crossing the road. We are appealing to the authorities concerned to put up bumps especially at schools points,” said the leaders.
Presiding over the celebrations, Mwingi Central Sub County Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Omari Dima while responding to the leaders promised to take the matter to KENhA adding that the bumps would also be erected at trading centres along the roads as the areas were equally black spots.
The DCC urged parents with needy children who did Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) to apply for bursaries from various institutions including Presidential Bursary Fund to ensure no bright needy students dropped out of school due to lack of fees.
The DCC called on the youths to refrain from involving themselves in criminal activities and urged local leaders and parents to also help security agents by preventing them from engaging in criminal acts.
