Over 100 families in Muhoroni Sub County have received food and non-food items from the National Government to cushion them from suffering caused by floods.
According to the area Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Erick Wanyonyi, the victims received bags of maize, table wares, mattresses, blankets and fortified flour.
“We have distributed food and non-food items to all affected families in the area. This will reduce suffering among them,” he said adding that the government would add more relief food depending on the situation and number of affected families. “We are monitoring the conditions of the floods. We will act according to the situation on the ground,” he said.
Wanyonyi noted the rain was likely go on throughout the month and urged parents to ensure their children were refrained from going to the river banks. “The schools are now closed. Make sure your children are under good custody to avoid drowning in the rivers and water flows,” he advised.
He also appealed to people living in flood prone areas to move to safer grounds to avoid loss of properties and lives.
The administrator who was speaking on Thursday during Jamhuri Day celebrations said the government would offer a long lasting solution by building dykes to prevent perennial floods in the region.
He asked the locals to plant more trees along the river banks to prevent water flows. Further, Mr. Wanyonyi said there were plans to construct the Soin-Koru multi-purpose dam aimed at curbing the flood in future.
