Eight Families Displaced as River Turasha Bursts

Eight families in Gashua village, Kipipiri Sub County, in Nyandarua have been displaced after River Turasha burst its banks on Tuesday night.

County Commissioner Boaz Cherutich who regretted the last Tuesday night incident, warned of possible flooding in areas of Kenton and those around the hilly Aberdare Ranges.

Kipipiri Deputy County Commissioner Edwin Chabari assesses the flooding situation in the area. The makeshift Turasha bridge remains a threat to the residents after the river soaked its banks. Eight families have been displaced.

“We have advised the families in the eight submerged houses to relocate to higher grounds even as we appealed for food and nonfood supplies to help the families.

“No infrastructure has been affected but we continue to monitor the situation to minimize losses and avert deaths. The chiefs are going round and briefing on any eventualities,” added Commissioner Cherutich during a phone interview with KNA yesterday afternoon.

The meteorological department has warned of intensified rains in the area, cautioning of possible flooding and landslides.

“We advise residents of the affected areas to avoid driving through or walking in flooded areas as the water may be deeper than they think,” noted Mr. Simon Kabutu, the area Director of Meteorological Services.

Kabutu informed that the rains will continue throughout the month, with possible cessation in the third and fourth week of December.
