Over  2,000 eye patients are set to benefit from free treatment and surgery at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), Eldoret.

According to an Ophthalmologist at MTRH, Dr. James Bett, patients needing surgery during an ongoing eye camp sponsored by the Lions Club in conjunction with the hospital will be treated free of charge.

Over  800 patients from Uasin Gishu and the North Rift region will benefit from the free surgery after being screened, said Dr. Bett.

Dr. Bett  said that during a similar camp last year, 1,000 patients were screened and 280 surgeries were performed.

“As a hospital, we urge residents with eye problems from across the country to come for screening which is sponsored by the Lions Club, those who will be found with eye defects will receive free treatment and surgery if required,” he added.

“I call on all patients with any eye defect to avail themselves at the hospital so that they can be screened thereafter surgery done,” added Dr. Bett

The  main cause of eye problems according to Dr. Bett, are diabetes, Vitamin A deficiency, cataract and sometimes injuries sustained by children as they play with objects that harm them.

MTRH praised the Lions’ Club for their exemplary work, especially in the provision of critical support to reduce blindness in society.

The International Director of Lions Club, JB Singh said they will continue supporting the less fortunate in the society through health care provision.
